Many home generators are not really portable, being considered standby units. These are permanently located outside a house and feed all or some of the circuits of the house wiring. By contrast, typical portable electric generators are meant to have appliances or lamps, etc. plugged directly into them. Standby units are of course, much more powerful and more expensive.
